Why live in a cave house?

From as early as the 8th century cave houses have provided accommodation. The original concept was borne during the Arab invasion of Spain this then led to cave houses being used by native farming communities as shelter for their families and livestock.

With Spain's development in coastal tourism there was a mass exodus by the younger generation in order to earn a sustainable wage so many of these dwellings lay forgotten for years. However these days cave houses are making a triumphant come back not only with British, French, Dutch and Italian's but also the younger Spanish from the large cities are buying them for investment and holiday homes.

Most of Spain's coastline is now either too expensive or too crowded and we have had many clients coming to us having sold their villa's or apartments for a large profit which has enabled them to purchase a large cave house, have it renovated and they still have ample cash to live on for several years.

Cave houses have many qualities and once you have lived in one it would be a wrench to return to conventional housing. When clients are looking for a cave to renovate it is sometimes difficult for them to envisage the finished project so we often take them to our own homes to help explain how easy the renovation can be.

• Each cave house is unique, every inhabitant has added a feature or even a room over the years and as a family grew so would the size of the cave house.
• They are not damp contrary to popular belief in fact all cave house have a self regulating temperature of between 18 - 20 degrees, warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
• Water, electricity and telecommunications are available to all cave houses in one form or another, many have solar power which is very efficient in this country and you would not notice the difference.
• All of our cave houses have full title deeds the same as conventional housing.
• Today's cave dwellers remark on the improved sleeping patterns which they believe reflect the feelings of peace and security.
• It's a documented fact that cave houses are safer in an earthquake as they absorb the movement although thankfully this area is not prone to serious earthquakes.
